BREAKING: Bearsted Library to shut for a month

Friday 31st March 2017

Bearsted Library will shut from April 15 until May 15 so that essential survey work can be carried out on the building.

The survey will assess the condition of the library and identify any further work that might be required to ensure its future.

As the investigation work is invasive, it is not possible for the library to remain open while it is carried out and the library will need to be closed for the duration.

The nearest alternative library is Madginford which will be offering extended opening hours for the duration of the investigation works so that it will be open for most of the times that Bearsted Library would have been. The opening times of Madginford will be:

Monday – Wednesday: 9am-6pm

Thursday: 2pm-6pm

Friday: 9am-6pm

Saturday: 10am-2pm

Sunday: Closed

Before the closure begins, Bearsted customers will be able to borrow as many books and other items as they would like, which will not be due back until after the closure period.

A spokesman for KCC’s Libraries, Registration and Archives service said: “KCC has a duty of care to all its customers and staff who use the building and we place safety above all other considerations.

“Detailed investigations are being undertaken to ascertain the extent of remedial works required to bring the building back into a good condition. Intrusive building surveys and building work to the structure can be dangerous particularly when working around members of the public and therefore KCC has taken the difficult decision to temporarily close the building.

“KCC is committed to delivering a library service in Bearsted and, if the library should need extended remedial works beyond this initial closure, alternative delivery venues are being investigated to ensure a library service continues through any works.”
