CANCELLED: Crunch secret meeting on scrapping of Park & Ride has been shelved

Tuesday 21st December 2021

A SECRET meeting to challenge the decision to scrap Maidstone's Park and Ride service has been postponed until the new year.
The "call in" by Liberal Democrats and Labour to oppose the plan to shut down the Willington Street and Allington sites, which the council runs, was taken in early December.
Arriva, the bus company which was running the service, asked for more subsidy than Tory-led Maidstone Borough Council (MBC), was prepared to pay.
MBC said surging Coronavirus infection rates had sparked the postponement of the special policy and resources committee meeting on December 22.
Instead, it has been re-scheduled for Wednesday 19 January at 6.30pm and will be held without public or Press present.

MBC defended its decision to hold the meeting in secret in a statement, which said: "The proper officer at Maidstone Borough Council has recommended that it is appropriate to discuss this matter in private as the contents of the discussion will disclose a third parties commercial interests as well as the council’s."
