COVID-19: Christmas hit as Maidstone infections soar even higher

Monday 21st December 2020

Huge increases in COVID-19 infections over the last 10 days have driven Maidstone and the rest of Kent in to the Government’s severe new tier 4 restrictions as from yesterday (Sunday).  This has major impact on Christmas plans for many households.

Only members of a household are permitted in their own home together with support bubble(s).  No additional mixing is allowed over Christmas.

People in tier four areas are not allowed to travel outside the tier to meet family and friends and specifically not abroad.

All non-essential shops must close for at least two weeks.

Kent is believed to be the starting point of a new variant of COVID-19 which scientists  now believe spreads about 70 percent more quickly.  It is not believed to be more virulent but is infecting more younger people. New vaccines are expected to be just as effective against it.

Severe pressures on Kent hospitals continue to grow and there are fears if infections still rise they will not be able to cope, especially with the onset of winter.  The number of Covid related deaths also continues to increase.

The figures below (issued most days by Kent County Council) indicate how infections have risen over the last 10 days or so in every Kent area, with Ashford particularly hard hit in recent days.  The seven-day trend continues to rise in every area although some of the most recent daily figures show small decreases..

Kent County Council shows rates of infection per 100,000 population over a progressive nine-day period.
