CQC: Maidstone care home has 'resolved previous problems' in latest report

A CARE home in Maidstone providing care to those with severe learning disabilities has satisfied an inspection team that previous problems have been resolved.

The inspection at Woodgate in Queen’s Road followed the poor rating received by the residential home last April.

This time, the service, which was assisting five people with complex communications issues and autism, received Good grades across the board and an overall Good rating from the Care Quality Commission.

Last April it was a different story, with the service provision branded ‘Requires Improvement’. It was also in breach of a regulation to protect people’s dignity and privacy. The inspector saw one person wheeled past on a shower chair without being fully covered and the same person was later left on the toilet with the door open, the report read.

This time, the CQC inspector found the service had improved, and people could be assured that they would be treated with dignity, privacy and respect at all times. Mealtimes were social occasions and users were given informed choices about how they spent their time. Activities in the home included sensory sessions, with opportunities to go out.

The inspector acknowledged: “After a challenging period, the environment has returned to one of calm and relatives reported that people were safe,” adding: “The registered manager and staff team have worked in partnership with other professionals to minimise risks to people’s safety.”

The report continued: “Staff knew people well, including their likes, dislikes and preferred routines and how to interact with people who had limited verbal communication, so they could understand their needs and respond to them.”

The inspector noted that the care service had been developed and designed to promote independence and inclusion.

The CQC report concluded: “People were supported to have maximum choice and control of their lives and staff supported them in the least restrictive way possible and in their best interests.

“Relatives said the service was well run and they would recommend it to others.”

The CQC will continue to monitor information received about the service. If anything of concern is brought to its attention, it may inspect sooner.
