HOUSING CRISIS: Demo planned for town hall at 5.30pm ahead of council meeting

Monday 4th October 2021

PROTESTORS from two groups opposed to housing developments are to join forces tonight to demonstrate outside the town hall.
Maidstone borough councillors meet tonight to discuss the Local Plan Review, the heart of which is two large homes' plans which would total 6,000 new dwellings.
The council is under Government pressure ti hit targets to build 1,200 new homes a year and have a five year land supply to meet them.
The council recently called on landowners to put forward plots in a 'call for sites'.
The meeting of the Strategic Planning and Infrastructure committee is at 5.30pm at the town hall and the public is welcome to attend.
Lindsing could be in line for 2,000 homes and Lenham Heath 4,000.
A spokesman for Save Our Heath lands (SOHL) complained the meeting is too early for many people to attend.

MP Helen Whately, whose patch covers Lenham and has been oppised to building there, said: "We’ve got to step up to the challenge of giving the next generation the chance to own their own home, but there’s a balance that needs to be struck.
"The council’s current plans risk decimating much loved green spaces in our borough – green gaps that give communities their identity and act as the lungs for our towns and villages.
"I’ve got serious concerns about the proposed developments at Lenham Heath and Lidsing, which are strongly opposed by local residents."
