LATEST: Marks and Spencer to close in Maidstone

Wednesday 13th October 2021

A MARKS and Spencer store in Maidstone will shut after Christmas.

The Week Street branch will close its doors just one year after the chain opened the new superstore at Eclipse Park.

Although an exact date has not yet been confirmed, bosses say the store will permanently close in January next year.

Sarah Blackburn, M&S regional manager, said: “Shopping habits are changing, so we’re rotating our store estate to make sure we have the right stores to offer our customers a brilliant shopping experience.

"As part of this transformation, we have announced to colleagues our proposal to close the M&S Maidstone store at 44 Week Street in January 2022.

“Our priority now is to talk to our colleagues about what this announcement means for them and, wherever possible, offer them alternative roles with M&S.

"We appreciate that this will be disappointing news for some and we would like to thank all our customers who have shopped with us in the store.

"We will be working hard to keep serving them in our recently opened Maidstone Eclipse Park store which offers local customers a wide range of clothing and home products, a new-look M&S food hall and café and click and collect facilities for shopping online.”

Business support group One Maidstone said it is disappointed that another “hugely important” retailer will disappear from the High Street.

Manager Ilsa Butler said: “We expressed a concern at the impact that the out-of-town development would have on the High Street.  We are very aware that the pandemic has caused many retailers, large and small, to change and re-assess their business plans.

“Consumer behaviours have changed but we are encouraged to see businesses adapting to this and a strong resilience from the independents in Maidstone post pandemic. It will be interesting to see who M&S choose to sell the freehold of their prime high street location too.”
