LIB DEM CRISIS: Two more council resignations being considered

Wednesday 20th October 2021

TWO more Liberal Democrats on Maidstone Borough Council are strongly rumoured to be ready to leave the party and join a breakaway independent movement.
Former MBC leader Cllr Martin Cox, Cllr Sue Grigg, Cllr Nicola Fissenden and Cllr Denise Joy all announced their departure from the Lib Dems this week, apparently over internal differences.
Cllr Michelle Hastie also resigned, although for different reasons.
Daily Downs Mail understands that two more members are on the brink of jumping off, too. Both have been taking soundings from colleagues but one described the Liberal Democrats as "dysfunctional at the minute".
The loss of five leaves a Lib Dem rump of just 12 councillors, up against 29 Conservatives. There have been increasing tensions since the Liberal Democrats, under Cllr Cox, were swept from office by the Tories in May.
