Lib Dems win Staplehurst

THE Lib Dem group has won the Staplehurst by-election by just six votes.

Paulina Watson succeeds Tory Richard Lusty, who resigned after the May local elections, by polling 609 votes in a recount, beating Conservative Louise Brice on 603. UKIP's Jamie Kalmar was third, on 311 votes.

The Conservatives now hold 24 of the 55 seats on Maidstone Council, with the Lib Dems on 20, Independents five, UKIP four and Labour two.
