Maidstone gym-owner stops thief from stealing over £700 worth of sunglasses

Thursday 11th October 2018

A BODYBUILDER heroically stepped in to stop a thief in his tracks as the offender tried to steal over £700 worth of sunglasses.

Jay Atkins, owner of Core Gym in King Street Maidstone was in Vision Express in The Mall on Monday, October 8 when the would-be shoplifter walked in.

As the shop assistant went to the back of the store, the man began thieving a large sunglasses display, causing Mr Atkins to turn and face him.

Jay Atkins said: “I went in the shop to get my sunglasses fixed, and as the woman went behind the shop, the man started emptying the sunglasses rack.

“He then gestured to me to be quiet by putting his finger over his mouth. I then immediately got in his way to stop him from leaving, he had about 20 pairs of glasses in his hands by this point.

Police arrived shortly afterwards and to reward Mr Atkins for his courage, the optician offered him a 10% discount.

Danny Aspill (37), of no fixed address, pleaded guilty and was sentenced to eight weeks behind bars on Tuesday, October 9.
