POLITICS: Tories prepare for power after council election victory

THE Conservatives will officially take control of Maidstone Borough Council later this month after its resounding victory on May 6.
The Tories now have a virtually unassailable 29 seat presence on the authority after years of no overall control.
They picked up five seats, including four from the ruling Liberal Democrats, at Allington, Shepway South, Heath, Bridge and Coxheath & Hunton.
The Lib Dems are understood to be holding an inquest into the defeat tomorrow night.
There was a turnout of just 33%.
The political make-up now consists of:
Conservatives 29
Liberal Democrats 17
Labour 4
Independents 4
Maidstone Independent 1
